Lessons from the Lord

Throughout the course of my short life as a "teenage missionary," God has shown me many wonderful things that have allowed me to grow and become more loving, selfless, and willing to do whatever He has in store for me, no matter how challenging. Whenever I get discouraged or doubtful, the Lord whispers words of encouragement and leads me to exactly where I need to be. I am young, I don't know even a fraction of all there is to know, and I am so imperfect, but God can still use me, and these are some things that have helped me to grow and serve the Lord the way He intends me to...

*When I pray about something, it won’t always turn out the way I hope it will or expect it too. Even if I’m praying about something I know would most likely be pleasing to the Lord, sometimes, it’s not part of His perfect plan, at least not at that time.  As I pray more and grow in my faith and relationship with Christ, I understand that His will is so much better than mine, and He knows exactly what He’s doing. It gives me peace that I don’t have to worry about the future, because I know that if I lay my concerns, thoughts, and praises down at the feet of my Father, He will provide and lead the way for me. That’s what faith is all about, isn’t it? Trusting the Lord without doubting His absolute power. (It’s hard!)

*Patience! Without it, things are much more of a challenge. Christ has taught me that I need to pray and think before I make a decision, because a lot of the time, I am very hasty and I want what I want right then and there. I’ll get an idea in my head and it’s hard for me to stop and pray about it. God has shown me that patience is rewarding, and things work out better later on and with God’s guidance than they would have at the time I wanted them to.

*Honest, sincere, and pure intentions lead to success. God will stand by you and support you in whatever you are pursuing, just as long as your passion is to serve Him and not yourself. It’s easy to serve because it makes you feel like a “good person,” however the only opinion that matters is the Lord’s and He won’t be “impressed” by your good deeds if they’re selfishly executed.
Instead of getting discouraged that you can’t completely change the world and help all of the poor and struggling people, focus on what you can do. Change always starts small, but the Lord will provide and He is in control. No, you’ll never be able to feed all of the starving, provide education for all underprivileged kids, or find homes for all orphans, but with the Lord, you can do a lot. If you’re able to change even one person’s life, introduce them to the love of their Savior Jesus Christ, and love them as much as humanly possible, it’s all worth it. I often think to myself, what if everyone who is privileged sponsored a child, went on a mission trip, or reached out to someone in need? The world would be a much better place! When I think about this, the Lord reminds me that I am doing my part and that all that I can do is serve others and my God the best I can, with all my heart. God will do the rest, I have complete faith in His unimaginable power.

One of my most treasured friends from Cambodia, who God used to show me what true love is; genuine love that is selfless, pure, and grounded in Christ.

How I got involved in community service!

Over the past few years, the Lord has opened so many doors for me service wise, and I have grown so much throughout the process! Prayer, trust, and faith have lead me to where I know he wants me; serving others and Him.

My passion for service began in 8th grade when I got involved in a school fundraiser for kids with cancer. I went around collecting donations from my friends, family, and teachers. That year, the middle schooler's efforts raised about 7 thousand dollars. One of my teachers, 3 other students and I were also able to actually go and visit the home for the kids with cancer and their families. We got to meet with the kids and see where our money was going and how it would impact these people. That was my first service project and ever since then, I've been in love with missions.

While I was living in Chile (8th grade), I got involved in a couple different service projects. I started going to an orphanage every other Friday afternoon with a group of high schoolers to play with the kids, take them on walks, and feed them dinner. It was an amazing experience, and it helped me realize my love for children. It took a lot of patience, but it was well worth it!

I also got involved in a Christian ministry called "Vision for Chile" through my best friends mother, who is one of their main coordinators. Through Vision, I was able to also be a part of one of their branches called "House of Hope," a home for college-aged girls who have lived in orphanages most of their lives. The problem is that once they reach the age of 18, the government can no longer support them in their orphanage, so they have to leave. "House of Hope" gives them financial, spiritual, and emotional support. Also, they train them to be business women and give them the tools they'll need to be successful when they graduate. The girls have their own micro business; they make and sell bracelets to raise money to help put towards their college tuition. There are about 8 girls living there now, and I was so blessed to be able to get to know them as my sisters in Christ. Also, through "Vision for Chile," I was able to visit a school for orphans near HOH, and one of my goals is to go back there during college as an intern. I would be living at HOH and teaching english at the school.

It wasn't until the end of 8th grade that I realized that I wanted to be a missionary. The day it hit me was when I was given a "Vision for Chile" intern shirt by the founder of the ministry. He knew that I was hoping to return, and he gave me this gift as an encouragement and "blessing." That's the moment that I realized that I wanted to serve God and the underprivaleged for the rest of my life.

In Korea, I have gotten involved in a community school for Korean kids who can't afford prestigious Korean tutoring. Every other Saturday morning I teach two arts and crafts classes and help the kids with their English. It's been such a blessing! I am also returning to Cambodia in December of 2013, where I will be reunited with my wonderful Cambodian children and the church leaders I met during my first visit!

Community service has taught me many things, and I will soon write a blog post about those important values the Lord has taught me! Stay tuned!

What is Scarves for Service?

First of all, let me introduce myself! My name is Emily Larsen, I am 15 years old, and I love the Lord with all my heart! My dream is to become a missionary, and I don't know exactly what God has planned for me, but I know that He will guide me and lead me according to his perfect plan! My #1 priority is to bring honor to His name and serve Him in any and every way I can. Thank you so much for visiting my blog, hopefully it will help you learn more about Scarves for Service and my walk with the Lord through service! Please check out the links in the sidebar to see learn more about this micro-business, how it got started, and where God is leading it. All of this is located on my website, along with pictures of my scarves, my first mission trip to Cambodia, and past and present local service projects! If you are interested, you can even check out an explanatory video I made about S4S on my YouTube channel.
If you are new to my story and don't quite understand what S4S is, let me explain! "Scarves for Service" was created in December of 2011. I got the idea to start making infinity scarves to sell in order to raise money to send kids to camp. I've gone to "Hume Lake Christian Camps" since I was in 3rd grade, and it hit me that some kids can't afford to go to camp. I'd never taken Hume for granted, but I never really realized how truly blessed I was to be able to attend such an amazing camp without financial worries. Hume was where I experience the very real and powerful presence of the Lord like never before, and I wanted others to be able to experience that as well!

In March of 2012, I knitted over 50 scarves and raised $700 at my first sale to donate to the "Send a Kid to Camp." Afterwards, I continued to knit scarves, and I sold them for the second time in September of 2012. Again, I raised $700, and that is amazing to me because of the biblical significance of the number 7. This time however, I decided to save the money to help fund my first upcoming mission trip to Phnom Penh, Cambodia in December of 2012!

I am currently knitting scarves to sell during the winter of 2013, and I am so excited! (This will be my 3rd Scarves for Service sale) I am going back to Cambodia in December of 2013, so that is where the money raised this year will go as well.
I feel so blessed with all the support from my friends and families. Two of my teachers have recently given me $100 donations for my mission trip funding. This was completely unexpected and so generous of them!! I'm so fortunate! The Lord is continuing to open so many doors for me in my missions journey, and I am proud to serve such a gracious God! Again, thank you so much for visiting this blog, God bless!
